Local Carpenters Who Know Montana Cold

If you're putting a sauna in your backyard or basement here in Yellowstone County, a thin box-store kit won't cut it. Between 60-mph winds off the Rims and sub-zero January nights, a sauna has to be built tight and insulated right. We're local woodworkers who build heavy-duty Western Red Cedar barrels, insulated cabins, and custom indoor sauna rooms—handling the pad, framing, vapor barrier, and heater setup from start to finish.

Built to Fit Your Space

Built for Below-Zero Weather

Thick 1.5" cedar staves outdoors and foil-sealed mineral-wool walls indoors keep the heat locked in—even when it's -20°F in the yard.

Real Finnish Stoves (Harvia & HUUM)

Choose a wood-burning stove for off-grid crackle and steam, or a WiFi-controlled 240V electric heater you can turn on from your phone on the drive home.

Tight Joinery, Zero Exposed Nails

We mill ball-and-socket staves for outdoor barrels and blind-fasten all interior tongue-and-groove cedar so you never lean back against a hot screw head.

What We Build in Billings

Four proven sauna styles, built on-site to fit your yard, floorplan, and budget.

Outdoor Barrel Sauna Billings MT

Custom Outdoor Barrel Saunas

Our most popular backyard build. Because a circle has no cold upper corners to waste heat, a barrel sauna warms up in about 35 minutes and rolls heat evenly back down to the benches. Heavy wet snow slides right off the curved roof instead of piling up.

  • Solid 1.5" thick Western Red Cedar staves & stainless bands
  • Wood-burning stove or 240V WiFi electric heater
  • Optional half-moon or full panoramic glass backwall

Indoor Custom Cedar Sauna Billings MT

Custom Indoor Cedar Saunas

Have an extra basement corner, spare closet, or master bathroom remodel coming up? We frame and line custom indoor saunas to the exact inch—sealed tight with mineral wool and foil vapor barriers so zero heat or moisture ever reaches your drywall.

  • Framed to fit any room, alcove, or sloped ceiling
  • R-13/R-19 mineral wool insulation & commercial foil vapor barrier
  • Tempered glass doors, passive airflow & under-bench LEDs

Outdoor Cabin & Cube Saunas

When you want flat floors, full standing headroom, and space to stretch out with family or friends. We build double-wall insulated backyard cabins and modern cube saunas with two-tier benches, insulated windows, and optional front changing rooms to block cold winter drafts.

  • Two-tier or L-shaped benches (fits up to 8 adults)
  • Snow-load rated roofs with weatherproof EPDM membranes
  • Optional front changing room to keep cold air out

Full-Spectrum Infrared Saunas

If 195°F steam feels too heavy to breathe, infrared is a great alternative. Carbon-ceramic panels warm your muscles and joints directly while keeping the air around you a comfortable 120°F–140°F. Warms up in 10–15 minutes—great after a long day on your feet or in the mountains.

  • Full-spectrum (Near, Mid & Far) radiant heating panels
  • Double-shielded low-EMF wiring (under 2mG)
  • Built-in Bluetooth audio & color light therapy

How We Build Them to Last

No thin pine, no stapled plastic, and no shortcuts. Here is what goes into every Billings build.

Grade-A Western Red Cedar

We use kiln-dried, tight-knot and clear Western Red Cedar. It naturally resists rot and mold, won't warp when cycling from -20°F to 200°F, stays comfortable to sit on, and smells like real timber.

Proven Heaters & Stones

From heavy wood-burning stoves packed with olivine volcanic rock to 240V Harvia and HUUM electric heaters with wall touchpads and phone app controls.

Foil-Sealed & Insulated

Our indoor rooms and framed cabins use high-density mineral-wool insulation behind taped commercial aluminum foil vapor barriers—keeping heat inside the sauna and moisture out of your framing.

Where We Work Around Billings

We haul the lumber straight to your place and build on-site—handling site checks, gravel pad leveling, and electrical coordination across Yellowstone County.

Common Questions

Straight answers on wiring, permits, heaters, and what it takes to put a sauna on your property.

Most residential electric sauna heaters (4.5kW to 9.0kW) need a dedicated 220V–240V, 30-amp to 40-amp circuit on a GFCI breaker—pretty much the same setup as a hot tub or clothes dryer. Smaller 2-person infrared units can often plug into a standard 110V outlet. We work directly with licensed local electricians so the wiring is clean and up to code.

It comes down to the kind of heat you like. Traditional saunas use a wood or electric stove to heat the room to 180°F–200°F, and you ladle water over hot rocks for a wave of steam. Infrared saunas run much cooler (120°F–140°F) and use radiant panels to warm your muscles directly without heavy air heat—great if you want a deep sweat after a workout without 195°F air.

In most parts of Billings and Yellowstone County, backyard structures under 120 square feet don't need a building permit. Our standard barrel and cabin saunas sit well under that limit. You still need to follow property-line setbacks (usually 5 to 10 feet) and any HOA rules. Read our Billings sauna cost & permit guide for full pricing and permit details.

Wood-fired stoves give you crackling fire, woodsmoke aroma, and serious heat with zero electrical hookup—even if a winter storm knocks the power out. They take about 45 minutes and an armful of dry firewood to get rolling. Electric heaters give you push-button convenience, exact temperature control, and phone app preheating before you even pull into the driveway.
