Built for Beartooth Mountain Winters

Red Lodge sits at 5,500 feet right at the foot of the Beartooth Pass, where winter storms dump feet of heavy wet snow and sub-zero temperatures linger for months. Cheap pre-fabricated sauna kits with thin walls and flimsy flat roofs simply collapse or bleed heat when mountain temperatures plunge below zero. We build heavy-duty cedar saunas engineered specifically for high-elevation Montana living.

Whether you own a second home near Red Lodge Mountain, a legacy family cabin up the West Fork, or a year-round residence in town, our saunas are designed to withstand 50+ lb/sq ft ground snow loads. Our cabin saunas feature steep 7/12 to 9/12 roof pitches with standing-seam metal roofs over R-21 insulated ceilings, ensuring heavy snow sheds cleanly while heat stays locked inside.

For mountain properties, nothing matches an off-grid wood-fired sauna stove. We install heavy cast-iron stoves like Harvia and Narvi paired with double-walled insulated stainless chimney pipes. You get deep 200°F löyly steam, crackling firewood aroma, and complete heating independence—even if winter blizzards knock out the power grid down the canyon.

If you prefer push-button ease when heading up from Billings for a weekend ski trip, we also install high-output 240V electric sauna heaters with smartphone WiFi controls. Turn on your sauna while driving through Laurel, and step straight into a 190°F cedar hot room the moment you unpack your ski boots in Red Lodge.

Red Lodge Sauna FAQ

Common questions on building mountain saunas, snow loads, and wood-burning stoves.

We build our cabin and cube saunas with reinforced 2x6 or 2x8 rafters spaced 16" on center, topped with exterior plywood sheathing, ice-and-water shield, and standing-seam metal roofing. Barrel saunas are equipped with custom peaked metal roof caps or cedar bevel shingle overhangs so winter snow slides off without sitting on the curved staves.

For remote cabins, off-grid parcels, or properties with limited electrical service (100A panels), a wood-fired stove is ideal. It delivers intense dry heat, traditional stone steam, and works during winter power outages. If your cabin has 200A service and you want to turn the heater on via WiFi before leaving Billings, a 240V electric heater offers incredible convenience.

Red Lodge is about an hour's drive (60 miles) down US-212 from our Billings shop. We do an initial site assessment, bring our leveling equipment to grade a compacted crushed gravel or timber-framed pad, haul all cedar lumber directly to your site, and complete the build in 2 to 4 days.
